My simple introduction

     Hello, I am Rodney Shultz. I am a freshman at the University of Pitt Johnstown. This blog is for my interactive fiction as a litterer class where Dr. David Justice is my professor. I am a business management major and play baseball hear at UPJ.

    I have very little experience with this course, however I plan to have a good knowledge of IF while taking the course. I have read a couple books that deal with interactive fiction. I plan to inform you guys about my experience playing different versions of IF and letting you know my experience with these interesting works of IF

Ballyhoo game cover      The first IF work that I have examined this week is an Infocom game called Ballyhoo. In Ballyhoo you are at the circus. You star out trudging through a large crowd at the circus and you make your way to a candy apple stand. You get a candy apple and you are met with disappointment. The fruit is rotten...          The game then continues to introduce your character. You aren't amused by the circus and you want to reveal you secret and that is to defy death.      Overall the game is pretty interesting, t he player's character is bedazzled by the spectacle of the circus and the mystery of the performer's life. After attending a show of Tomas Munrab's "The Travelling Circus That Time Forgot", the player stands near the tents instead of rushing through the exit. Galatea

  Galatea alters the typical interactive fiction game mechanics by concentrating instead on the player's interactions with a single non-player character, the  Galatea. Much of the interest of the piece derives from the ambiguous nature of the player-NPC dialogue. The form of the conversation and, indeed, the nature of Galatea herself shift depending on the focus the player places on certain aspects of the character's personality. Numerous endings are possible. Gameplay centers around the developing dialogue between Galatea and the player when asking about topics in the previous conversation. Two commands, "think about" and "recap", are provided to keep track of what has already been said. The former is also used to advance the storyline, as the player character draws conclusions about the story as it has unfolded to that point.
